Falling in Love with your Therapist and the Challenges of Group Therapy
Falling in love with your therapist sucks but isn't unusual. Also, is group therapy for everyone?
Hi Deb
Great to connect. Found you after reading an inspiration post you wrote on Quora about Transference (my current nightmare) and that led me to read your book Lovelands.
I just wish to ask you your thoughts on group therapy sessions. I have been with my therapist for four and a half years now and visited places in our sessions I never knew existed (as you can imagine) but signed up for group sessions this Autumn.
After a couple of weeks of these sessions I have been overwhelmed with doubt and anxiety as to their usefulness. I am not a people person in that I could be in a party of 100 people and still be lonely.
I feel these sessions have put me back due to getting too upset within myself with others problems as they relate them. I am in fact finding it hard to open up and rather feel I am drifting back to my old self of withdrawal with my emotions.
You will probably guess I am confused by how I should feel. Any suggestions or wise words please Deb?
Hello,
I relate to your sentiments - your transference feelings towards your therapist, being able to feel lonely sometimes in a big group, and the challenge of managing the anxiety of a group therapy setting. All of these situations can be confronting and very confusing.
